Community Mourns the Loss of Former Weenusk Chief

Condolences from NAN Grand Chief Derek Fox

Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Derek Fox has extended his condolences to the community of Weenusk First Nation following the passing of former Chief George Hunter. Hunter passed away in his home community on an undisclosed date.

A Respected Leader

Hunter served as Chief of Weenusk First Nation from 2015 to 2019. During his tenure, he was known for his strong advocacy for the rights and well-being of his community members. He was also a respected figure within the Mushkegowuk region, where he was the youngest Chief at the time of his election.

Grand Chief Fox noted Hunter's commitment to his community, saying, "His leadership and dedication to the people of Weenusk First Nation will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those who knew him."

Mourning the Loss

The community of Weenusk First Nation is mourning the loss of their former Chief. Hunter was a respected elder and his passing leaves a void in the community. The Deputy Grand Chief of 49 First Nations in northern Ontario expressed the collective grief, stating that the communities are "mourning after a 10-year council member has passed away."

The circumstances surrounding Hunter's death are not known at this time. Police have confirmed that two adults died in a house fire in the community, but it is unclear if Hunter was one of the victims. NAN Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler confirmed that three other people survived the fire.

The community of Weenusk First Nation will hold a memorial service for Hunter in the coming days. The details of the service will be announced once they are finalized.
